Who writes our content
Our reviews are written and checked by Owen Hartley, our Reviews Editor. Owen is a researcher and editor, not a doctor, pharmacist, dietitian or other licensed health professional. We report what labels, studies and public health sources say. We cannot tell you whether a supplement is right for you.
Talk to a professional first
Please speak with a doctor or pharmacist before you start, stop or change any supplement. This matters most if you:
- Are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding.
- Take prescription or over-the-counter medicine.
- Have a chronic health condition or an upcoming surgery.
- Are buying a supplement for a child or an older adult.
Never delay seeking medical care, or ignore advice from your doctor, because of something you read here.
About supplements in the US
The FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety or effectiveness before they are sold. Statements on supplement labels and websites have not been evaluated by the FDA. Supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
A higher price is not a safety guarantee
Premium pricing does not mean a product is safer or better tested. Some costly supplements contain high doses that can interact with medicine or cause side effects. Check the label with your pharmacist, whatever the price.
Research changes
Studies on supplements are often small, and new research can change what we know. We update pages when we can, but some information may be out of date by the time you read it.
Emergencies
If you think you are having a medical emergency or a serious reaction to a supplement, call 911 or your local emergency number right away. For possible poisoning, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
